Failed low-sophistication IED detonation in New York City in US demonstrates continued soft-target vulnerability to lone-wolf attacks

13 December 2017

At approximately 0700 local time on 11 December 2017, 27-year-old Akayed Ullah detonated a low-sophistication improvised explosive device (IED) at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City.

Ullah suffered wounds to his torso and hands; two bystanders suffered headaches and ringing ears. Media reports have indicated that the explosive was a crude device with a low yield, although no official statement has been provided on the potential yield and effect had the device operated as intended. Damage was limited by the device’s failure to effectively detonate; media reports indicated that at least one of the pipe’s end caps failed to contain the blast and blew off, causing Ullah’s injuries.
