Second Zumwalt-class ship continues trials despite equipment failure

11 December 2017

The second Zumwalt-class guided-missile destroyer, Michael Monsoor (DDG 1001), has continued builder’s trials (BTs) despite equipment failures that affected its propulsion and electrical systems one day after leaving Bath Iron Works, US Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) officials said.

The systems' problems and associated repairs are not expected have an impact on the ship's planned delivery in March 2018, NAVSEA officials said in a statement.

On 5 December, NAVSEA said: “DDG 1001 experienced an equipment failure to a harmonic filter after loss of an induction coil, impacting the ship's ability to test propulsion and electrical systems at full power.”

Harmonic filters are required “to meet power quality standards for downstream equipment,” NAVSEA explained.
