Post-election vacuum complicates Czech helicopter procurement

Czech defence and security experts say a lack of assertiveness on behalf of senior Ministry of Defence (MoD) officials could jeopardise the procurement of 12 medium multirole helicopters for the Army of the Czech Republic (ACR) air element.

The MoD received bids from the governments of the United States and Italy on 31 October for a government-to-government international tender worth CZK12 billion (USD558 million) for the supply of 12 platforms.

The US Department of Defense offer of 12 Bell UH-1Y Venom helicopters is competing against an Italian government bid of 12 Leonardo AgustaWestland AW139 airframes.

“The US government bid required the approval of the US Congress, which is valid until 31 December.
