PLAAF declares Y-9 transport aircraft fully operational

04 December 2017

China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) has declared the Shaanxi Aircraft Corporation (SAC) Yunshuji-9 (Y-9) transport aircraft fully operational after a fleet of the locally built medium-sized aircraft completed training exercises in the South China Sea, the state-owned Global Times newspaper reported on 3 December.

“The Yun-9 [Y-9] is now able to undertake combat missions,” the paper quoted the PLAAF as announcing a day earlier on its official WeChat account.

In its first long-range maritime exercise the aircraft “completed air-drop missions without assistance from ground control, and the crew prepared procedures to cope with any emergency”, Liu Bao, a PLA officer was quoted by the paper as saying in the announcement.
