Sudanese president’s proposed successor only intended to encourage terrorism delisting, gradually simplifying foreign bank compliance in 2018

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on 16 November announced he would step down before the 2020 presidential election and support the Gezira state governor, Mohamed Tahir Ayala, should he choose to run as the ruling National Congress Party’s (NCP) candidate.

The president’s statement coincided with a visit by US Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan. Sullivan suggested that the United States was prepared to discuss Sudan’s removal from its State Sponsors of Terrorism (SST) list.
