USN plans Vulcano GLR firing tests

15 November 2017

The US Navy (USN) has revealed plans to fund BAE Systems Land & Armaments to conduct firing tests of the Vulcano guided long-range (GLR) 5 inch (127 mm) projectile from a Mk 45 gun.

Developed by Leonardo Defence Systems (formerly OTO Melara), the Vulcano GLR projectile is designed to achieve GPS-enabled metric accuracies at ranges of up to 90 km. BAE Systems and Leonardo announced a joint initiative in June 2017 to offer the Vulcano family of munitions for BAE Systems guns, including the Mk 45 naval gun (5 inch) and the 155 mm Advanced Gun System.
