US carrier strike groups face unique challenges in Western Pacific

The Western Pacific’s geopolitical and climatic makeup can uniquely challenge safe and effective operations for a single carrier strike group (CSG), let alone the trio of CSGs the US Navy (USN) has drilling with allied forces close to the North Korean Peninsula.

This is the first time that three USN strike groups have drilled in Pacific waters in about a decade, and reportedly the first time this far west of the United States in perhaps about four decades.

Speaking with Jane's aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68) in the Sea of Japan, USN officials said they have to be extra vigilant here, compared with other regions.
