Two German divisions increased their readiness for NATO Article 5 collective security operations during Exercise ‘Vital Sword 2017’, in Wildflecken, Hesse, which ended on 9 November.
The five-week command post exercise involved the staff of the 1 German/Netherlands Corps high readiness headquarters training the Division Schnelle Kräfte (DSK) rapid reaction division and 1st Panzer Division in directing troops in high intensity operations. This resulted in the DSK reaching its full operational capability (FOC) for Article 5 operations during two weeks in October, followed by the 1st Panzer Division achieving its initial operational capability (IOC) at the end of the exercise.
