The modernisation of the Army of the Republic of Macedonia (Armija na Republika Makedonija: ARM) will slow down as priority projects are re-assessed and redefined. A new modernisation plan will follow the strategic defence review (SDR) currently being prepared by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in Skopje with assistance from some NATO nations and experts.
The postponement in the modernisation of the ARM is reflected in the draft 2018 defence budget presented in Skopje on 2 November. This foresees EUR97 million (USD113 million) or 1% percent of GDP being spent on defence.
This is an insignificant increase following the steady decline since 2007, the last time it was 2% of GDP.
