COTECMAR’s BAL-C logistics ships garner more interest

(IHS Markit/Daniel Wasserbly)Colombian shipbuilder COTECMAR is moving towards potential new orders for its Short Range Logistic Support Ship (BAL-C) from Peru, Paraguay, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), sources in Bogota told Jane’s .

A USD13.5 million BAL-C vessel was ordered in October 2016 by Honduras, was delivered in late October, earlier than contracted.

According to local military sources, COTECMAR is in advanced negotiations with Peru and Paraguay, which are interested in ordering two BAL-C ships each.

While Peru wants the vessels for use at sea and on the Amazon and other fluvial ways, and Paraguay would use its own vessels in the Parana River.

Peru has expressed interest in obtaining a licence for local shipyard SIMA to build additional vessels of the type.
