Japan’s biggest defence companies post gains

31 October 2017

Japan’s biggest defence manufacturers, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI), have posted gains in the first six months of fiscal year 2017 compared with the same period in 2016.

MHI said on 31 October that its year-on-year sales jumped 4.3% to JPY1,825.4 billion (USD16 billion) and its operating income, or earnings before interest and taxes, was JPY38.2 billion, comparable with sales in the same period in 2016.

KHI’s sales climbed modestly by 2% to JPY709.7 billion but its operating income nearly doubled to JPY16.1 billion.

Both corporations said that growing defence sales played a role in supporting growth in the period.
