The Chinese Communist Party’s 19th Party Congress concluded on 24 October with the formal election of the party’s Politburo and its Standing Committee. Although President Xi Jinping consolidated his power, the new leadership composition also suggests significant remaining constraints on Xi and a probable wind-down of the anti-corruption campaign.

China’s quinquennial national Communist Party congresses are generally considered the most important events in the country’s political calendar.
