South Korea pursues new 120 mm mortar system

29 October 2017

South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) is developing a new 120 mm self-propelled (SP) rifled mortar system, a senior official revealed at the Defence IQ Future Mortar Systems conference held in London.

Eungsoon Jang, Director of the Armoured Project Team at DAPA, said the aim of the programme is to provide the Republic of Korea Army (RoKA) with a 120 mm mortar system that features improved accuracy, range, and rate of fire.

The long term aim is to automate the observer to shooter chain, which each target expected to be engaged by four systems.

Other key requirements include reduced maintenance, crew reduction of at least one person, and a unit cost of under USD1.5 million per system.
