BAE Systems looks to harness electromagnetic spectrum for enhanced sensing

27 October 2017

BAE Systems is ‘borrowing from nature’ to develop advanced concepts in the electromagnetic spectrum, according to Professor Nick Colosimo, the company’s Principal Technologist in Disruptive Technologies.

Speaking at the IQPC Disruptive Technologies in Defence Conference on 25 October, Colosimo said that utilising the electromagnetic spectrum is of vital importance for a range of applications, pointing the ability to leverage it in order to extend sensing ranges. “Generally speaking the physics means that we need to operate in the radio frequency (RF) spectrum if we want to see at very long ranges, as most electro-optical systems tend to max out at about 30 to 40 km.”
