Kuwait to get ‘all-new’ Abrams, not upgrade existing tanks

Kuwait has decided to acquire a new fleet of 218 upgraded M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks rather than upgrade its existing ones, a US State Department official has told Jane’s .

The official was clarifying a 16 October announcement by the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) that said Kuwait had requested 218 M1A1 tank hulls, 120 mm cannons, and AGT-1500 engines from US military stocks, as well as transportation costs for an estimated USD29 million.

This followed a Kuwaiti request submitted by the DSCA to Congress in December 2016 covering the equipment and services needed to upgrade its existing 218 M1A2 tanks.
