Two Indian Air Force (IAF) Garud special forces personnel were killed in a firefight with Islamist militants in the restive northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir on 10 October.
The Indian government’s Press Information Bureau (PIB) said in a statement that the Garuds, who were operating alongside an Indian Army (IA) commando team, died in an exchange of fire with several militants in Bandipora district, which is located approximately 66 km north of the state’s summer capital, Srinagar.
The PIB said that the militants, two of whom were killed in the incident, had hurled grenades and fired at the joint military team that had surrounded the house in which the insurgents were hiding.
