Forced militia disarmament in North and East Darfur to provoke cargo disruption; unlikely to threaten Sudanese government

05 October 2017

Sudanese Vice-President Hasabo Mohammed Abdel-Rahman announced on 2 October that operations against Darfuri militia groups will be conducted from 15 October.

The campaign is set to run for six months and will be conducted by the 20,000-strong Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF is a paramilitary force comprising Janjaweed militia directed by the government’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS). The target of this campaign is the 8,000-strong Sudanese Revolutionary Awakening Council (SRAC) led by Musa Hilal Abdallah. Hilal has refused to disarm and threatened armed retaliation.
