Creation of progressive coalition to compete in Colombia's 2018 elections improves long-term viability of FARC peace process

On 25 September, presidential candidate Humberto de la Calle, Colombian Liberal Party (Partido Liberal Colombiano: PLC), the government's chief negotiator in concluded peace talks with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), said he was open to an electoral alliance with other progressives that support the implementation of the peace agreement reached between the government and the FARC in November 2016.

His comments follow an announcement by Claudia López, Green Alliance (Partido Verde); Sergio Fajardo, Citizen Commitment (Compromiso Ciudadano); and Jorge Robledo, Alternative Democratic Pole (Polo Democrático Alternativo: PDA), of the formation of Coalición Colombia, an electoral coalition that will present a single candidate in the first-round presidential election in May 2018 as well as shared lists of candidates for the March legislative elections.
