Mexico details long-term plan for international deployments

07 April 2015

Mexico plans to establish an infantry battalion that will deploy on international peacekeeping operations, a government inter-agency team known as the Peacekeeping Operations Working Group (Grupo de Trabajo - Operaciones de Mantenimiento de la Paz, GT-OMP) announced on 5 April.

The GT-OMP is comprised of the ministries of National Defence (Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional - SEDENA), Navy (Secretaría de la Marina - SEMAR), and Foreign Relations (Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores - SRE), and aims to co-ordinate and enhance Mexico's participation in global stability. The declaration follows Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto's announcement in September 2014 at the UN that Mexico would contribute troops to international peacekeeping missions.
