Despite earlier declarations to the contrary, the European Union is prolonging its peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic (CAR) to enable a UN-led force to assume security operations in the troubled country.
The EU member states agreed on 7 November to extend the EUFOR RCA mission until 15 March 2015. "This follows a request by the authorities of the Central African Republic and a renewed mandate from the UN Security Council," said the EU Council in a statement released after the decision.
The Council directly represents the EU's 28 national capitals. The extension is necessary to effect the handover of EUFOR RCA's tasks to the UN-led peace operation MINUSCA, it noted.
