South Korean ammunition for the world market [ID14D2]

South Korea’s Poongsan Corporation (Hall A, Stand 007) has established itself as a key supplier of ammunition for not only the Republic of Korea (ROK) Armed Forces, but also an increasing number of export customers. The company’s Defense Product Division can supply not only small arms ammunition, but also artillery and tank ammunition, as well as propellant and semi-finished products.

For the K1A1 main battle tank armed with a 120mm/44 calibre smooth-bore gun, the company is producing at least two types of 120mm ammunition with a semi-combustible cartridge case, the K276 and the K277.

The K276 is the armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding sabot-tracer (APFSDS-T) round with a muzzle velocity of 1,700m/s, while the K277 is the high explosive anti-tank multipurpose- tracer round with a muzzle velocity of 1,130m/s.

The latest ROK K2 tank is armed with the longer 120mm/55 calibre gun fed by an automatic loader and it is likely that new ammunition is being developed for this weapon with enhanced capabilities.

The company can also supply 105mm ammunition for use by tanks. This includes the 105mm APFSDS-T K274.

In addition, Poongsan manufactures a complete range of 105mm and 155mm artillery ammunition, with the latter including the 155mm K307 base bleed high-explosive round, which has a maximum range of 41km when fired from the 155mm/52 calibre K9 self-propelled artillery system currently deployed by the ROK Army.
