Long-range precision [ID14D2]

Lockheed Martin (Hall D, Stand D007) is presenting a selection of capabilities here at Indo-Defence, including its precision rocket artillery systems. Among them is the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, which has been in US Army service since 2005 and has achieved several export orders including those from the UAE, Jordan and Singapore.

HIMARS is based on the FMTV five-ton truck and can fire the entire family of MLRS (multiple launch rocket system) weapons, including six GMLRS (guided multiple launch rocket system) rockets or a single ATACMS (army tactical missile system). The HIMARS fire control and communications systems are interchangeable with those of the standard M270A1 MLRS launcher, meaning that no extra crew training is required for its use. HIMARS is air-transportable by C-130 Hercules, enabling it to be deployed into areas with rudimentary landing strips. The vehicle's high mobility allows it to 'shoot and scoot', moving away from the launch area rapidly and before counter-fire weapons can be brought to bear.

GMLRS is the most important weapon for HIMARS, and more than 3,000 GMLRS Unitary rockets have been fired in combat. The rocket is also compatible with the M270A1 launcher. This summer, Lockheed Martin successfully conducted the final developmental/operational test rings of the GMLRS Alternative Warhead. This has been developed under subcontract by ATK, and is designed to achieve the same e ffects as the GMLRS submunitions area-denial warhead, but without the lingering dangers of unexploded warheads. As such, it is compliant with international treaties on cluster munitions.
