Fighting between police and rioters in Xinjiang raises risk of retaliatory attacks in other Chinese cities

31 July 2014

Dozens of people were reported killed in an incident official Chinese state media described as a premeditated and coordinated terrorist attack in Shache (Yarkant), Kashgar prefecture, in the southwest corner of China's Xinjiang region, on 28 July.

Details on the incident are scarce. State media reports claimed that the incident began when police intercepted suspected militants who were attempting to bring explosive materials into a Kashgar tradeshow. Some of the suspected militants escaped, but returned soon after with a large mob of axe- and knife-wielding assailants to attack a government building and a police station in Shache, as well as random passing vehicles.
