Ukrainian requests for EW equipment go unanswered

24 July 2014

Ukrainian requests for more sophisticated electronic warfare (EW) equipment have gone unanswered despite its air losses rising, with the downing of two more Sukhoi Su-25s on 23 July, to 11 fixed-wing aircraft and eight helicopters since April, when these shootdowns began.

"It is clear that Russia continues to move more sophisticated weapons across the border and that the level of training and support from the Russian armed forces given to the rebels in eastern Ukraine that are backed by Moscow is increasing," said a NATO intelligence source.

US news outlets have reported that Ukraine made special requests to the United States and NATO in June for EW equipment and jammers to counter the growing number of surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems being supplied to the Russian-backed rebels.
