Australia outlines plans for F-35 MRO centre

03 July 2014

Australia has become the second Asia-Pacific country after Japan to outline a plan to establish a maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility to support Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft operated by regional air forces.

In comments to IHS Jane's on 3 July, Australian Defence Minister David Johnston stated his government's plan to set up a regional F-35 MRO centre will strengthen defence relations between Australia and the United States, enhance the Royal Australian Air Force's (RAAF's) capability to operate the F-35 and provide opportunities for Australia's aerospace and defence industrial base.

"The [Australian] government is supportive of the concept of an Asia-Pacific hub, from a capability perspective but also it would maximise opportunities for Australian companies," said Johnston.
