To meet emerging customer requirements, General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) MOWAG (Hall 6, Stand B151) has developed its latest Piranha 3+.

This is being shown at Eurosatory in the armoured personnel carrier configuration and in addition to its crew of three carries nine dismounts.

The latest Piranha 3+ incorporates improvements as a result of feedback for more than 4,500 Piranha 3s and light armoured vehicles deployed by 13 customers.

When compared with the standard Piranha 3, Piranha 3+ is slightly longer, wider and higher and has an increased typical gross vehicle weight of up to 27 tonnes, compared with 22 tonnes for Piranha 3. It is fitted with a modular armour package originally developed for the heavier Piranha 5.

Various fire power solutions can be fitted: the vehicle at the show has a Kongsberg Protector M151 remote weapon station, armed with a .50 M2 HB machine gun.

A new powerpack consists of a Caterpillar C13 diesel developing 520hp, coupled to a ZF 7HP902S fully automatic transmission. This is claimed to provide a 30 per cent increase in power and give a maximum road speed of 110km/h. Conventional and hydropneumatic suspension systems are available.

Piranha 3+ has greater internal volume, as well as extra electrical power for the additional onboard electronic equipment. It is fitted with a high-capacity air-conditioning system and an NBC system. The latest Piranha 3+ will be marketed alongside the Piranha 3, which is powered by a 400hp diesel engine.
