Included in a selection of products shown on Outdoor Stand B310, Mercedes-Benz is displaying a new Long Range Patrol Vehicle (LRPV) variant of the (6x6) G-Class and the latest military Unimog – both of which are being exhibited in public for the first time.
This latest LRPV variant has been developed to meet the possible future requirements of an existing customer. The (6x6) chassis is essentially a stretched 4x4 G-Class 300 CDI with the addition of a driven third axle, initially developed to meet part of Australia’s Land 121 requirement. In excess of 800 have been ordered to date, deliveries including a quantity of LRPVs.
In LRPV configuration, the all-steel body is fitted with a rollcage, a ring-mount and foldable front windscreens. Seating for up to six crew members is provided. On this latest LRPV variant, the standard sheet steel cab has been removed, to be replaced by a waist-height drop-in steel armoured crew cell. Ballistic protection is Level 1, with underbody blast protection in excess of Level 1.
Also exhibiting for the first time is a military variant of the latest Unimog U5023. Unveiled commercially in April 2013, the latest U4023 and U5023 Unimogs are slightly larger overall than their immediate predecessors, the U4000 and U5000.
In addition to numerous ergonomic improvements, the cab is slightly larger and to handle increases in gross vehicle weight to 10,300kg (U4023) and 14,500kg (U5023), the Unimog’s trademark torsionally flexible chassis and coil sprung axles have been uprated.
To account for the higher power and torque output of the new engine, the Unimog’s multigear transmission has been uprated.
The preceding U4000 and U5000 models are still available for users not requiring compliance with current emissions legislation.
