Bursting into the export market (ES14E1)

16 June 2014

ATK Armament Systems has been awarded its first export contract for the 30 x 173mm MK310 Mod 0 Programmable Air Bursting Munition – Traced (PABM-T), which was originally developed to meet the requirements of the US Marine Corps.

The Belgian Army has placed a contract with the company for an initial quantity of this ammunition for use with the General Dynamics European Land Systems – MOWAG Piranha IIIC (8x8) infantry fighting vehicles fitted with a two-person turret armed with the ATK Armament Systems 30mm MK44 cannon.

Quantity, delivery and order value have not been disclosed.

The MK310 Mod 0 PABM-T has been designed to be fired from the standard ATK Armament Systems 30mm MK44 cannon, when fitted with a gun control unit with an inductive ABM fuze setter coil in the MK44 feeder and modified fire control system. It uses a single base propellant and an aluminium cartridge case with a muzzle velocity of 980m/s.

The trace time is a minimum of two seconds and is typically between five and six seconds.

The gunner can select three modes of operation of the PABM-T, airburst, point detonate and point detonate – delay, and close or standard arming distance. The airburst mode is highly effective against dug in infantry and anti-tank teams.

The 30mm MK44 cannon is currently deployed in a wide range of air, land and sea applications with 21 customers in Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland, Japan, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Slovenia, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and the US.
