Global award program celebrates first group of 2014 winners for achievement of business objectives through outstanding use of information, analytics and expertise

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (May 1, 2014) – IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS), the leading global source of information and insight, today announced that seven leading European companies have been selected to receive IHS SPECTRUM Excellence Awards for 2014. This prestigious industry award program spotlights organizations and individuals around the world who make critical decisions and achieve their business goals through innovative use of information, analytics and expertise. The new award winners represent a variety of sectors including energy; automotive; aerospace, defense and security; chemical; technology; and construction.

“Industry leaders are making smart choices and achieving important competitive advantages by leveraging best-in-class market, industry and technical expertise,” said Scott Key, IHS president and chief executive officer. “We are proud to take this opportunity to recognize our award winners’ outstanding accomplishments and continue supporting their work in the future.”

A celebration for 2014 IHS SPECTRUM Excellence Award winners in Europe will be held at the IHS Forum, focused on “Europe’s Global Competitiveness: Opportunities & Pathways,” in Berlin. Awards will be presented during a dinner banquet on Tuesday, May 13 at 6:30 pm local time.

Established in 2006, this popular IHS award program has recently expanded to honor achievements across a variety of workflows/disciplines including economics and country risk: environmental, health, safety and sustainability; pricing and purchasing, product design, supply chain and more.

“Every decision matters,” said Stephanie Buscemi, IHS senior vice president and chief marketing officer. “From high-level strategy to ground-level tactics, industry leaders are achieving groundbreaking results by basing decisions on the winning combination of critical information, advanced analytics and industry-specific expertise from IHS. We thank our award winners for sharing their stories.”

The first IHS SPECTRUM Excellence Award winners for 2014 include:

e2v – Based in the United Kingdom, this global technology provider helped one of its major customers comply with rigorous new conflict-mineral regulations related to 548 electronic components from 60 different companies in the supply chain. By teaming with IHS to meet the customer’s urgent request, e2v secured a £1MM contract renewal, avoided a roadblock to future orders and prevented the loss of two month’s work by one of its key full time employees.

Finmeccanica – The Research Department for Italy’s leading AD&S manufacturer partnered with IHS to support development of business strategies that have contributed to increased profitability in its AD&S business and a rise in exports to 55% of total revenues with both defense and civil projects in new high-potential regions. In addition, Finmeccanica worked with IHS to maintain its ranking on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index at the European and World levels.

Maersk Oil – Owned by the world’s largest overseas cargo shipping company, this Danish energy firm makes expert use of an IHS tool to meet tight deadlines for project bids, eliminating the need for hundreds of hours of manual cost-estimation and saving 75% of the time required to ramp up an outside contractor. Decision makers are confident about the estimates’ proven accuracy – e.g. one early-stage estimate done in hours was within 10% of a detailed analysis that took a week.

Saab AB – Sweden’s largest provider of high-tech AD&S solutions supports its successful export strategy by offering all 14,000 employees worldwide the opportunity to access best-in-class market intelligence from IHS – a tenfold increase in the company’s user community. Consolidating formerly disparate subscriptions and vendors from five Business Areas has increased efficiency and increased usage of expanded market intelligence resources for greater return on investment.

Tikkurila Oyj – Finland’s leading manufacturer of paints for surface protection and decoration standardized the creation of safety data sheets and labelling for more than 2,000 products from four sites in four countries by implementing an IHS software solution. Automating translation into up to 15 languages reduced translation time from 1 day to less than 1 minute, lowering costs and risk of errors by eliminating dependence on outside contractors who work manually.

Valeo – This Paris-based, tier-one supplier to the world’s leading automakers developed an innovation strategy, supported by IHS information and expertise, that has helped Valeo achieve a series of major benchmarks. Recent successes include ranking among Thomson Reuters 100 Global Innovators for first time and growing Valeo’s business in Asia – with original equipment sales in China up 31% in 2013, 16% higher than the market – the biggest increase in any region.

Willmott Dixon – One of the United Kingdom’s largest privately owned construction companies is building stellar quality into its projects by increasing its leverage of construction industry standards information from IHS. With more than 45% of staff trained in six months, use of the online standards tool is now three times its prior level. Positive results range from reassuring a customer about a pipe-fitting solution to resolving of a subcontractor dispute and saving the company £35,000.

These first seven award winners for 2014 will also be considered as nominees for the annual “Best of the Best” IHS SPECTRUM Excellence Award.

Nominations for the second and final round of IHS SPECTRUM Excellence Awards for 2014 will open starting May 15, 2014. Presentation of all remaining awards for 2014 – including the Best of the Best” winner – will take place at the IHS Forum in Washington DC during November 2014.
