Spanish Army helicopters conduct first ever landing on US warship

11 March 2014

Spanish Army helicopters have landed on board a US warship for the first time, in an exercise on board USS Gunston Hall . The 16,195 tonne full load Whidbey Island-class landing ship dock (LSD) vessel was transiting the Strait of Gibraltar when the compatibility exercise took place at the end of February.

A Boeing Chinook and an Airbus Cougar from the army's Fuerzas Aeromóviles del Ejército de Tierra (FAMET) were used in the exercise, the army said.

Given the "similarity of the navy's requirements with the techniques and procedures of the Spanish [army air] crews," the army pilots were able to perform the take-off and landing tests in formation with navy helicopters.
