Risk of violence in Ukraine will rise substantially around Crimean referendum

06 March 2014

The local parliament in the Ukrainian region of Crimea today (6 March) voted to schedule a previously proposed referendum on 16 March to decide whether the autonomous republic should be integrated into the Russian Federation.

The peninsula's residents will be asked whether they favour greater autonomy as part of Ukraine or secession from Ukraine and integration into the Russian Federation. Simultaneously, the deputies sent a request to Russia's parliament asking for legislative preparations to be made for Crimea's integration.

The Crimean referendum will be a decisive flashpoint in the ongoing crisis between Ukraine and Russia, which is likely to determine whether the Russian military invades eastern Ukraine, therefore possibly prompting an inter-state and civil war.
