US Navy completes initial cockpit upgrades for C-130T Hercules

07 October 2013

The US Navy (USN) has received back into service its final Lockheed Martin C-130T Hercules transport aircraft to go through an initial cockpit upgrade programme, the service announced in September.

The last of the 19 C-130Ts to be modernised with a 'glass' cockpit by BAE Systems was handed back to the navy in August (the navy has told IHS Jane's that one of its 20 aircraft was not put through this initial upgrade process).

Each aircraft is now equipped with a Garmin GNS 480 GPS system, an electronic flight bag, electronic horizontal situation indicator and engine instrument display system. These modifications will ensure C-130Ts remain viable leading up to additional cockpit upgrades as part of the Avionics Obsolescence Upgrade (AOU) programme, scheduled to begin in 2016.
