Thales awarded contracts for Astute-class sonars

25 February 2013

Contracts have been awarded for the supply of the integrated active/passive search and attack sonar suite for the UK Royal Navy's (RN's) last two Astute-class nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs).

Under awards announced on 25 February, Thales UK will supply the Sonar 2076 system for the sixth and seventh Astute-class boats, to be named Agamemnon and Ajax . Sonar 2076 will form part of the boats' Common Combat System.

Thales UK was awarded the supply contract from prime contractor on the Astute-class programme, BAE Systems Maritime - Submarines.

The head of combat systems at BAE Systems Maritime - Submarines, Ian Hawkes, said: "Placing these contracts not only continues a well-established and enduring relationship with Thales UK, it also helps the submarine enterprise to meet the submarine programme affordability challenge, by obtaining economy of scale through batch procuring the sonar."
