Ukraine conflict: Hensoldt to deliver additional radars to Ukraine

Hensoldt has been contracted to deliver four additional TRML-4D active electronically scanned array (AESA) ground-based air-defence radars to Ukraine.

The radars, ordered by Diehl Defence, are intended to supply Ukraine's IRIS-T surface-launched medium-range missile (SLM) air-defence systems, Hensoldt announced on 27 June.

According to Hensoldt, the contract is in the mid-double-digit million-euro range, with deliveries to Diehl Defence expected to commence from January 2024.

The TRML-4D is a software-defined C-band (4–8 GHz) AESA radar that utilises a gallium nitride (GaN) solid-state transmitter. The system can detect close to 1,500 targets in a 250 km radius to a height of 30 km and is capable of detecting platforms with a radar cross-section of 0.01 m². Fighter aircraft can be tracked as confirmed targets at ranges of more than 120 km, and supersonic missiles at ranges of more than 60 km. It can automatically trigger electronic counter-countermeasures and allow locally developed solutions to be integrated into the radar's operations suite.

IRIS-T SLM is a medium-range air-defence system developed by Diehl Defence that uses the IRIS-T SL surface-to-air missile. It is designed to provide 360° protection against fixed-wing aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), helicopters, cruise missiles, and large-calibre rockets. In October 2022 Ukraine received the first two of four IRIS-T SLM systems that were funded by the German government.
