Spain’s new 8×8 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) is due to begin firing trials next month and the first vehicles are expected to be operational in 2022, Secretary of State for Defence Ángel Olivares stated on 17 June.

Speaking after a meeting at General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) Santa Bárbara Sistemas’ plant in Alcalá de Guadaira near Seville, where he watched driving trials of the prototypes, he described the vehicle as “one of the essential pillars” of Spain’s national defence.

“Without it the armed forces could not participate in international peacekeeping operations,” he was quoted as saying in a Ministry of Defence (MoD) press release on 17 June.
