Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering (KPE) displayed a pre-production Alan-2 armoured vehicle for the first time at the Azerbaijan International Defence Exhibition (ADEX) 2022 held from 6 to 8 September.

The Alan-2 is a 4×4 multi-purpose armoured vehicle that is designed to be able to be configured for several roles, including as an armoured personnel carrier (APC), an ambulance, and a reconnaissance vehicle. It was developed as a successor to the original Alan, a derivative of the Plasan SandCat Gen 3, which has been licence-produced in Kazakhstan for Kazakh Special Forces units since the delivery of the first batch was announced in December 2018.

Unlike the first version of the Alan, the Alan-2 is not based on an existing design. Speaking to Janes at ADEX, Ilgiz Safiulin, chief design engineer at KPE, estimated that between 70 and 75% of the vehicle's components were produced in Kazakhstan.

Development of the vehicle is believed to have commenced in 2020, with the prototype completed within fourteen months despite the Covid-19 pandemic. Janes understands that the initial prototype of the Alan-2 has been designed with the requirements of the Kazakh Special Forces in mind.

During ADEX, the Alan-2 was shown configured as an APC with a roof-mounted remotely operated weapon station (ROWS), although there were also conceptual renderings of the vehicle equipped with a roof-mounted protected weapon station in place of the ROWS, as well as an ambulance version and a reconnaissance and surveillance variant with an extendable sensor mast installed on the rear.
