Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's military campaign in the West Bank and Gaza Strip has now escalated to the point that it is conceivable that his strategy might include the actual expulsion – or even the elimination – of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, a scenario once widely rejected as implausible.
After two weeks of Operation Defensive Shield, hundreds of Palestinians (the actual total remains unknown) and perhaps 25 Israeli soldiers lie dead. Although this major operation commenced after a suicide bomber killed 25 people in Israel, its diplomatic impetus appears to have been a dispute over words.
