DR Congo presidential candidates face off in second round
- Article Tools
| 22 August 2006 |
Incumbent President Joseph Kabila and Jean-Pierre Bemba will face each other at a second-round presidential run-off in the Democratic Republic of Congo after neither won more than 50 per cent of the vote in the 30 July polls.
There had been fears of violent protests if Kabila won an outright majority in the first round, and tensions were running high ahead of the announcement of the results.
Although Kabila's failure to win an outright majority could lessen the possibility of widespread violence in the near term, his expected victory in the second round means further unrest is probable in the run-up to the second-round run-off.
