As part of ongoing content improvement processes, IHS has enhanced its Military Capabilities inventory information. In 2013 we have delivered three major enhancements:

• Increased granularity to improve precision, searching, filtering and visualization
• Data harmonization with IHS Jane’s Defence Equipment & Technology portfolio
• Definitions for all fields, to improve clarity of language, terms and scope

These enhancements deliver multiple benefits, including:

• Faster search, analysis and reporting including “one-click” solutions
• New analysis opportunities including enhanced data visualisation
• Easier transition between content via stronger links between IHS data sets
• Better understanding of terminology, scope and definitions

Increased Granularity 

Three basic fields (Country, Type and Role) are expanded to incorporate 11 new fields, in order to capture additional granularity across our data sets.

There is now a dedicated field for “Platform Family” that allows customers to quickly identify common platforms across national, regional or global armed services.

Synonyms and NATO reporting designations for non-Western equipment have been isolated, so customers can search, filter and sort against a wide variety of designations without confusion.

Additionally, many platforms are multi-use or multirole, so Secondary Role classifications have been created to capture this information.

Data Harmonization 

Seven inventory data fields are harmonized with the platform data found in the IHS Jane’s Defence Equipment & Technology database.

Harmonizing data in this way means that customers can find the Military Capabilities data they require and then quickly and easily review the related Defence Equipment & Technology content to answer technical questions about platform capability and systems.

Definitions

For all 16 new inventory fields there are clear definitions of the terms that we have used. This additional information helps customers to understand the kind of information captured within each field.
