After leaving school, he studied mechanical and production engineering at the Stow College of Engineering (now part of Caledonian University) in Glasgow. His industrial training took place at Barr & Stroud Engineering Works (now Pilkington Glass) and at Jos.Rathgeber A.G., an engineering company in Munich, Germany.

After graduation in 1971, he was employed as Ingenieur by National Machinery Corporation, (formerly J.G.Kayser GmbH) a machine manufacturer in Nürnberg, Germany. In 1972, Keith joined Mercury Marine, Belgium, producer of Mercury & Mariner outboard motors and MerCruiser inboard and stern drives. In 1975, he commenced working with Yamaha Motor Company in Amsterdam as manager in the technical department.

In 1984, Keith was elected a member of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland. In the same year, he left Yamaha to pursue interests in marine consultancy, publishing and journalism. In 1988, he started the World Marine Engine Database, currently with over 10,000 engine records and 350 engine producers. In 1994, he was elected a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland.

In 1989, Keith joined Jane's Information Group commencing with his appointment as their agent in the Netherlands and became editor of Jane’s Marine Propulsion.
