Saab contracted to begin Gripen E work

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has officially contracted Saab to undertake development work of the JAS 39 Gripen E combat aircraft for the Swedish and Swiss air forces, the company announced on 15 February.
According to Saab, the FMV has placed a SEK2.5 billion (USD390 million) initial development contract out to 2014. A follow-on development contract for SEK10.6 billion is expected to be placed in the coming weeks.
In addition, a contract for the conversion of 60 Gripen C platforms to the Gripen E standard for the Swedish Air Force (SwAF) will be placed in the fourth quarter of 2013. The total value of this work is set at SEK47.2 billion.
A contract to support mission-specific equipment and cover maintenance will be placed in the fourth quarter of 2014 "at the latest", Saab said. Deliveries of the first Gripen E aircraft to the SwAF are set to commence in 2018 and run through to 2026.
