Recriminations fly over Venezuelan president's health
1/7/2013
Venezuelan vice-president Nicolás Maduro returned to Caracas on 3 January, offering the assessment that President Hugo Chávez - currently battling a severe respiratory infection in hospital in Havana, Cuba, following cancer surgery - would return "sooner rather than later" to Venezuela. His optimism appeared to be at odds with a communiqué issued by Minister of Information Ernesto Villegas, who referred to the severe lung infection as having led to "respiratory insufficiency" and requiring a strict adherence to the treatment regime.
Villegas also accused the media and political opposition of using Chávez's apparently deteriorating health to destabilise the country. The Spanish newspaper ABC , citing intelligence sources, claimed on 3 January that Chávez has been placed in an induced coma to reduce pain and non-essential bodily functions.
