Disparate focus on climate change as Americas suffers impact of extreme weather
10/31/2012
The conference, Interclima 2012, is an annual event that brings together policymakers, researchers, and regional institutions - this year including the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and the Inter American Development Bank (IDB).
It comes as the eastern seaboard of the United States is being battered by Hurricane Sandy, which had earlier wreaked havoc in Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, and the Bahamas. Also, sudden torrential rains in Argentina on 29 October caused chaos and at least two deaths in the capital Buenos Aires. The potential negative impact of the flooding caused by the rains for agricultural production in the agricultural heartland provinces of Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, and Córdoba are yet to become clear.
