New class of Russian destroyers may have BMD role, says USC

The head of Russia's United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) has announced plans to start building the first of six new destroyers for the Russian Navy - possibly incorporating a ballistic missile defence (BMD) capability - in 2016.

In comments reported by state news agency RIA Novosti on 22 June, USC's chief executive officer, Roman Trotsenko, told local media that Severnoye Design Bureau had begun working on the ship design.

Construction will probably be shared between USC's Severnaya Verf and Baltiysky Zavod shipyards in Saint Petersburg. Trotsenko added that the destroyers may have a BMD role, but this remains to be confirmed.

The new vessels are being procured to replace the ageing Udaloy-class (Project 1155) and Sovremenny-class (Project 956) destroyers that form the bulk of the navy's current destroyer inventory.
