Biofuel has been loaded on board Military Sealift Command (MSC) fleet replenishment oiler USNS Henry J Kaiser (T-AO 187) in preparation for its delivery to the ships and aircraft comprising the US Navy's (USN's) Great Green Fleet, which will be participating in 'RIMPAC 2012' beginning on 29 June.
USN Secretary Ray Mabus has set a goal of demonstrating the green fleet a carrier strike group of nuclear-powered vessels, hybrid-electric and other ships and a flight wing powered by biofuel blends by 2012 and deploying it operationally by 2016.
The biannual 'RIMPAC' exercise, the largest US-led international maritime exercise, will allow the navy to test, evaluate and demonstrate the cross-platform utility and functionality of advanced biofuels operationally.
Henry J Kaiser took on 900,000 gallons of a 50:50 blend of advanced biofuels and traditional petroleum-based fuel on 13 June and will deliver the fuel sometime in July to the green fleet platforms participating in 'RIMPAC', which runs until 3 August.
