Australia pioneers fully integrated ‘glass tower’

The new control tower at Broome International Airport, Western Australia, is the first of four identical facilities due to go into operation in 2012 under Airservices Australia’s National Tower Programme (NTP).

The air navigation service provider runs the NTP as part of a AUD900 million (USD969 million), five-year project to upgrade ATC infrastructure, including new towers, new technology and safety services.

Construction work is also complete at new towers at Rockhampton, Adelaide and Melbourne, which are now being fitted out with the same Integrated Tower Automation Suite (INTAS) under a contract awarded to Saab Sensis and major subcontractor Nav Canada in 2009. “The new towers project aims to introduce a blue print for a nationwide programme centred on a standardised approach to tower construction and fit out,” an Airservices official told IHS Jane’s. “This includes reducing the range of tower building configurations by using a modular approach to building design.”
