South Korea's defence procurement agency has confirmed that Russia's Sukhoi T-50 (PAK-FA) fifth-generation stealth fighter is a surprise candidate to be the Republic of Korea Air Force's (RoKAF's) next-generation fighter (FX) aircraft.
The Defense Acquisition Programme Administration (DAPA) said on 20 July that Russia's military export agency Rosoboronexport lodged its interest in bidding for the USD7 billion contract earlier in 2011 and will compete against the Boeing F-15SE Silent Eagle, Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) and the Eurofighter Typhoon.
The programme represents the third phase (FX-III) of the RoKAF's FX programme.
