US officials question production readiness of E-IBCT
By Daniel Wasserbly
3/16/2010
Congress and US government auditors are questioning whether the US Army's effort to field infantry brigades with situational awareness and precision strike technology is ready for production.
Equipment to be delivered under the Early Infantry Brigade Combat Team (E-IBCT) Modernisation programme - a legacy of the former Future Combat Systems project - fared poorly in testing and some officials are unsure design changes will be ready for production, which is planned for 2011.
"Why not just delay it for a year? Why is there a budget request for procurement of this stuff in there?," Democratic Representative Adam Smith asked during a 10 March hearing on the army's Fiscal Year (FY) 2011 budget request.
Smith chairs an influential subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee and oversees the writing of legislation that would fund weapon programmes such as E-IBCT Modernisation.
