The US Navy (USN) is set to increase its funding of unmanned platforms over the next few years, a senior officer told Jane's on 11 August.
The navy plans to spend USD6 billion across the Future Years Defense Program (FYDP) a five-year budget projection on unmanned platforms, Vice-Admiral Barry McCullough III, Deputy Chief of Staff of Naval Operations for Integration of Capabilities and Resources said.
Vice-Adm McCullough, who revealed the spending plans at an Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) conference in Washington DC, said the total USD6 billion includes USD4 billion for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and USD1 billion each for unmanned surface platforms and unmanned underwater vehicles.
He also said that navy officials have developed an unmanned systems vision through to 2030, adding that the budget and strategy are part of a broader effort to embed aerial drones in day-to-day maritime operations.
The USN is particularly interested in developing truly autonomous systems which can operate in shallow water and challenging environments such as the Arctic.
