UK's Daring sets sail for sea trials
By Jon Rosamond
7/20/2007
The first of six Type 45 anti-air warfare destroyers for the UK Royal Navy (RN) sailed from BAE Systems' Scotstoun yard in Glasgow on 18 July, for 28 days of contractor-led sea trials.
During its maiden voyage off the west and north coasts of Scotland, Daring will be run up to full power to test the pioneering Integrated Electric Propulsion system.
Some 360 rounds of ammunition will be fired from the single 4.5 inch and two 30 mm guns in order to confirm the ship's structural integrity.
However, the main armament, the Principle Anti-Air Missile System, is still in the early stages of integration and is unlikely to be fired before Daring enters service in December 2009. 117 0f 218 words
